Do I Need Lead Lining for a Portable X-Ray Machine?

Chad Hutchison

If you are considering purchasing a portable x-ray machine, you may be wondering whether or not you will also need lead lining. The answer will depend on several variables and must be guided by the specific needs of your business and the manner in which the x-ray machine will be used.

Unlike stationary units, portable x-ray machines are designed to be moved between locations. Some are only intended to move from one room to another, while others are purposefully made more durable to facilitate further transport to external sites.

Irrespective of the type of machine you purchase, if the unit is to remain in one location then you will most likely be required to obtain a physicist’s report. Although this may not apply depending on which state you’re located in. If the physicist’s report recommends lead lining or any modifications, then the recommendations should be followed.

Without lead lining, staff located in the proximity may be exposed to radiation repeatedly because a stationary x-ray machine is pointed in the same direction when taking images. This is why it’s important to follow any suggestions made in the report.

A further consideration is that state laws may prohibit the use of a portable x-ray machine in certain circumstances. Therefore it’s very important to review state laws and regulations regarding the use of x-ray equipment before making any firm purchasing decisions. This information can be located on most state health department websites.

As an example, Massachusetts, Nevada, Washington and Virginia don’t allow the use of a portable x-ray system unless it is located somewhere that they can’t access a stationary alternative. New York will soon be following suit. For instance, if a patient is bedridden in a nursing home or hospital, then this rule may apply.

If you are going to be using a portable x-ray machine, lead lining can be beneficial. This is because when the machine is moved, it can produce scatter radiation. Lead lining helps to protect you and your staff from this scatter radiation.

If you plan on regularly imaging patients with x-rays, then you may need to invest in a quality x-ray table to accompany the machine. But with all the different types and features of x-ray tables on the market, it can be tough to decide which one is right for your needs. This article will help you understand some of the key features of medical x-ray tables, so you can make an informed decision about which type of table is right for you.

The x-ray table provides a stable surface for patients to sit or lie on while images are being taken, and the bucky underneath helps to hold the DR panel in place. This setup allows for clear and concise images to be obtained, which is essential for diagnosis and treatment. X-ray tables can be stationary or mobile, and your choice between these two options will depend on a number of factors including your room size and design, the type of x-ray machine you have, and the needs of your business and your patients.
